Six emerging Ethiopian performing artists are participating in NIPAI's distance learning scholarship program 'The Director and the Play' — a three-month intensive on directorial craft, stage composition, and the creative dialogue between director and dramatic text. Participants engage with international faculty through structured online sessions, peer workshops, and independent project work.
The program builds on ShebaStage's commitment to international training for Ethiopian artists. Initially planned as an in-person workshop in Berlin (April 2026), the program pivoted to distance learning when Schengen visa applications for the six participants were unable to be processed in time. This format allows the full cohort to participate fully while keeping the learning intensive.
Monthly check-ins, peer reviews, and a final showcase mark the program's structure. Participants emerge with a strengthened directorial vocabulary and a body of work demonstrating their growth.
