Six Ethiopian Artists Begin NIPAI 'The Director and the Play' Scholarship

ShebaStage is proud to announce that six emerging Ethiopian performing artists have begun NIPAI's three-month distance learning scholarship on directorial craft and theatrical composition.

ShebaStage is proud to announce that six emerging Ethiopian performing artists have begun NIPAI's three-month distance learning scholarship program 'The Director and the Play' — running from April 3 to July 3, 2026.

Led by Leli Lensamo as group leader with Dimetros Emawayew providing IT support, the cohort is engaging with international faculty through structured online sessions, peer workshops, and independent project work focused on the director's role in shaping theatrical performance.

The program originally planned an in-person workshop in Berlin (April 2026), but pivoted to distance learning when Schengen visa applications for the six participants could not be processed in time. This format allows the entire cohort to participate fully while preserving the intensive, transformative nature of the learning.

Monthly check-ins, peer reviews, and a final showcase will mark the program's progression. By July, each participant will emerge with strengthened directorial vocabulary and a body of work demonstrating their development.

We will share regular updates throughout the program — including reflections from participants, glimpses into their projects, and the work of NIPAI's faculty. Follow this journey here and on our social channels.
